Case Study: Blendtec's $50 Video and a 700% Sales Jump

Most small businesses assume real marketing results require a real marketing budget. Blendtec's "Will It Blend?" series is the case study that gets cited over and over again for a reason: it's one of the cleanest, best-documented examples of a small business turning almost no budget into a genuinely massive result, and the numbers behind it are real and verifiable.

What actually happened

In October 2006, Blendtec's marketing director George Wright started filming short videos of the company's blenders grinding through things they clearly weren't meant to blend, marbles, golf balls, an iPhone. The first five videos reportedly cost around $50 total to produce. There was no agency, no media buy, just a camera, a blender, and a willingness to be a little ridiculous on the internet.

The number that actually matters to a business owner

Views are a vanity metric until they turn into revenue. What makes this case study worth studying isn't the view count, it's that Wright directly attributed a 700% increase in home-product sales to the campaign, a figure reported by Inc. Magazine and corroborated by Ad Age at the time. That's not a projection or an estimate years later, it's a real jump tied directly to a specific, cheap piece of content.

The actual lesson, not the highlight reel version

The takeaway isn't "go viral and you'll be fine," that's survivorship bias dressed up as strategy. The real lesson is narrower and more useful: Blendtec had a genuinely demonstrable product benefit, and they showed it in the most direct, unmistakable way possible, repeatedly, consistently, over years, not as a single lucky video. Consistency and a clear product truth did more work here than production value ever could have.

Most small businesses don't need a viral hit, they need content that shows what they actually do well, made consistently enough to compound. That's the version of this strategy we build for clients: real footage of real work, posted often enough that it adds up.
